Recycling at BEM in Rio Vermelho

Today children that take part on BEM projects found out a very cool and creative way to preserve the environment and liven up their homes at the same time. During the environment workshop, after discussing about the importance of preservation and the negative impact of garbage in nature, a group of kids searched through the streets of Chapadinha neighborhood for candies’ wrapping paper so they could make a beautiful decorative cord. Protest against Exploitation of Children

This year, Brazil has impressed the world with protests that occurred in many parts of the country. Crowds have packed the streets demanding basic rights, social justice and the end of the corruption in politics. Taking the chance in the social movement, the children that took part in the BEM projects in Paulistas-MG, went to the streets reporting the child exploitation. In October, educators from Paulistas organized a protest against children exploitation. Children made colorful posters and went out to the streets claiming the children’s right of having access to protection, care, affection, love, school, health and so on. The posters emphasized that children should play and not work. In some of them, you can read: “Children have to study and not work”, “Children who do not work, is not exploited!”. The simple and important gesture of these children led the community to reflect about the children exploitation that, despite being a crime, it’s still part of the reality of many children in remote regions of Brazil. Cláudio’s & Floraci’s New House

The Nova Pousada dwellers, Cláudio Moreira da Silva and Floraci Oliveira da Cruz have signed on October, 23rd, the Sale and Purchase Agreement of the house where they will live with their six children. The house has been purchased from Francisco de Assis Guimarães and it has 4 rooms, a garage and an unfinished part that will be reformed and extended. Two more rooms and a bathroom will be build. By the end, the house will be 54 square meters of constructed area with 3 rooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry in 264 square meters terrain. According to Cláudio, this house is a dream that came true to his family. They currently live in a mud shack at the same neighborhood. A family of impact

A family of impact

Cláudio and Floraci live at Nova Pousada neighborhood in Sabinópolis. The couple lives with their six children and some chickens in a mud shack right in front of a ravine decorated with huge banana trees. Despite the house being very simple, it’s hard to leave Cláudio’s and Floraci’s house without drinking a tasty coffee, which its grains have been roasted in their own wood stove. A few months ago, Cláudio’s family started attending the Community Center, built by BEM through an agreement with Netherlands TEAR and a partnership with the City of Sabinópolis. At the moment, their children are going to the Teenagers Group and the whole family attends the IEMP bible studies which takes place every Friday at the same place. The life of this family has changed radically since they made a decision for Christ. In October, James Gilbert returned to Sabinópolis after 12 years. The american missionary borned in Wilwaukee, Wisconsin and resident in Brazil for 13 years, is married with Elsie Gilbert and father of four children: Lucas, André, Victória and James William. Founder of the Instituto Lado a Lado in Viçosa – MG, James has provided service for social organizations like Rebusca, Açao Social, Asas do Socorro and Bem Viver when photographing children and their families in everyday situations that reveal the beauty and dignity of the children and those who are around even in difficult times. As a way to draw attention of churches and other groups regarding social responsibility for the children in vulnerable situations, James launched an artistic installation with the theme: “A Liturgy for our Children” in Anápolis – GO and then in Fortaleza – CE.
