Ana Maria and Sebastião, an example of family economy

Ana Maria and Sebastião, an example of family economy

The project Family Farming in Sabinópolis attends to 122 families that plant in farms and gardens. Through food production for the subsistence of the farming families, along with the sale of organic food in the local market, the project is an important tool for the good quality of food generation and increase of family income. In a moment when Brazil approves a law that allows the no identification of transgenic food in labels and packaging, the whole organic production of food values the project and raises the self-esteem of the small farmers. In addition, the project has provided a significant improvement in the per capita income of the families that commercializes the surplus of production and of course, contributes in the economy of the local community.  A family that has long distinguished itself in the garden cultivation at BEM is Ana Maria and Sebastião, more known as Tião. 32 years ago, the couple started working in BEM’s lands. The touching meeting of Lithuania and Jeice

The touching meeting of Lithuania and Jeice

Lithuania’s stay in Sabinopolis made it possible for the nursery’s volunteer to meet personally Jeice’s family, her sponsorkid from Paulistas’ BEM’s Child Care Center. Days before the meeting, we’ve gotten the news that Jeice was anxious to finally meet her sponsor from so far away in Holand, who for the first time came to Brazil for working as a volunteer in a project that she had sponsored previously. For years, sponsors used to send letters, gifts and other things to show the special feeling between the child and the donor. A personal meeting, in most cases, never happen.  Very few donors have the chance of meeting the child and his or her family who have being blessed from far. Yet, it was different with Jeice. Lithuania came to Brazil and we scheduled as fast as we could her meeting Jeice, who is no longer participating in the Child Care Centre’s due her age, but still remembers with affection all the gifts, letters and love demonstrations. The meeting was moving!...

Language Master & BEM: a successful partnership

Language Master & BEM: a successful partnership

There a lot of advantages of learning how to communicate in english. There is no discussion about the fact that english, for being one of the main languages in the global comunication opens the doors to contact with other cultures and because of that there is a lot of interest in companies and philantropic organizations for transcultural and international partnership. English is also an useful tool for the people that like to travel and meet other cultures. Through english communication, accessing other communities’ habits becomes possible. Not even forgetting the access to information that is only available in english on the internet, including scientific publications etc. Furthermore, a person that is capable to speak english can get better jobs and salaries than a person with the same skills who doesn’t speak the language. That and a lot more are the reasons why teaching english with a different focus on each age is happening now. The photo...

World Health Day 2014

World Health Day 2014

Annemarie Voorsluys, student International Change and Project Management, specialization Public Health Currently, my brother and me are staying in Sabinopolis, Brazil, and I am giving health classes about sexual health, and when possible about nutrition and hygiene. The World Health Day has been a concern for me, since it is a day to highlight a public health topic. This year the focus of the World Health Day is on vector-borne diseases: a small bite can be a bit threat. You could think of Malaria. Unfortunately, I can’t relate very much to this topic during my weeks in Sabinopolis, since I’m keeping myself busy with sexual health and lifestyle related health issues, including nutrition and hygiene. Besides, as far as I am concerned, there are not much vector-borne diseases in Sabinopolis. However, one thing I can say about vector-borne issues, is that the mosquito bites come in nightly attacks in Sabinopolis! My legs are extremely itchy because yesterday, a mosquito (or spider, not sure what the little animal actually was)...
